New TV Channels lanuches by LP33 for South by Southwest Festival

Sometimes watching a music festival from the comforts of home beats being at the festival itself (a week-long slog of dirty clothes, poor sightlines, and the occasional riot; see: Woodstock ‘99). But South by Southwest in Austin, Texas is the kind of music festival music lovers really want to be at. For those of us who can’t make it this year, LP33.tv may be the next best option.

The new on-demand music site is launching its exclusive SXSW TV channel today. They are also official sponsors of the festival.

The channel will feature live footage, news, music videos, and blogs throughout the festival, which is being held from March 13-22.

The site already has a blog up and running that includes updated information on bands that have been added to the festival lineup as well as video updates from performers themselves.

SXSW started in the late 80s and has now grown to become one of the largest festivals in the country. Each year more than 1400 performers participate in the festival as well as music industry executives and fans. Last year’s festival was expected to bring in more than $110 million for the city, according to the Austin Business Journal.

Past performers have included Van Morrison, Donovan, and Morrissey along with thousands of smaller independent acts. New bands continue to be added to the lineup all the time. Let’s hope LP33 can find some room for footage from Boston’s own Apollo Sunshine and Syracuse’s Ra Ra Riot, two of the best live bands out there today, for this reporter’s money.

Search for apt title for Ram Charan and Rajamouli’s film is ended. After much brainstorming and mulling over several titles, Magadheera has been chosen for this much-awaited flick. S S Rajamouli, the master director of mass entertainers, felt that this title would be the apt for the film’s theme and content. The movie is a period love story with the element of reincarnation. Ram Charan and Kajal play lead roles while Srihari is donning the pivotal character. Geeta Arts is producing it on lavish scale.

Rajamouli is now canning key sequences at specially erected set at Ramoji Film City. Magadheera is slated for April release. By February end, the film’s entire shoot would be wrapped up. M M Keeravani is providing 6 excellent songs and the audio would be out in March.

TV ratings: Harrington's Open win drives 4.7m to BBC

Irishman Padraig Harrington's victory in the Open golf tournament was watched by a peak audience of 4.7 million viewers last night, Sunday July 20.

Coverage of Harrington's retention of the title brought an average of 3.3 million viewers and a 25% share to BBC1 between 2.30pm and 7.10pm, according to unofficial overnight figures.

Ratings peaked in the 15 minutes from 6.15pm.

Earlier, ITV1's live coverage of the German formula one grand prix picked up 3.3 million viewers and a 32% share between midday and 3pm.

A new episode of ITV1's drama Midsomer Murders pulled in the biggest audience of the day with 6.7 million viewers and a 28% share between 8pm and 10pm.

BBC2's motoring show Top Gear came a competitive second in the 8pm slot, with 6.1 million viewers and a 26% share over an hour - just 100,000 off its highest rating of the series so far for its launch on June 22.

The concluding episode of BBC1 drama George Gently came third in the 8pm slot with 4.2 million viewers and an 18% share over an hour - down just 100,000 on last week.

Channel 4's feature-length documentary The Seven Wonders of the Muslim World gained 800,000 and a 4% share between 7.30pm and 9pm, plus a further 52,000 on Channel 4 +1 an hour later.

Channel Five's repeat of Hitler's Secret Bunkers: Revealed drew 500,000 and a 2% share in the 8pm hour.

At 9pm, Big Brother highlights brought 3 million viewers and a 13% share to Channel 4, with a further 293,000 watching on Channel 4 +1 at 10pm.

The third episode of BBC2's repeat showing of Sky One's Ewan McGregor travelogue Long Way Round attracted 2.2 million viewers and a 9% share between 9pm and 9.40pm.

Another repeat of wartime movie The Great Escape brought 2.1 million viewers to BBC2 between 5.15pm and 8pm.

The buzz around the new Batman movie boosted Sky One's repeat showing of Batman Begins, which pulled in 553,000 and a multichannel share of 3.5% between 9pm and 11.40pm.

However, ITV2 just pipped it in the 9pm slot with 554,000 - a 3.1% share – tuning in for its movie repeat The Chronicles of Riddick over 130 minutes.

KENW-TV goes live, digital

The first live, digital and high definition program was broadcast Monday at Eastern New Mexico University’s KENW Broadcast Center.

The hour-long program that ran from 8-9 p.m. featured information about the upcoming conversion of analog television to digital television.

“The purpose of the program is to clear up the issues and questions about digital TV,” said KENW promotional director, Rena Garrett. “There are a lot of people that don’t understand all of the terms being used.”

KENW personalities Don Criss and Sheryl Borden discussed how to make the conversion to digital TV, myths surrounding the conversion and answered questions that were phoned in by viewers.

“There was a diverse range of questions asked by the viewers,” said KENW director of engineering, Jeff Burmeister.

One caller from Grady asked when and why is the signal for television being the converted.

“The government has mandated that all analog signals will cease on Feb. 17, 2009,” Criss said. “The change to digital will free up some frequency that the government will be able to sell and utilize for different purposes.

“The quality of the picture will be improved and the amount of channels available will increase this is a good thing that is happening,” Criss said.
The calls came in from other rural communities such as Arch, Forrest and Capitan, Burmeister said.

“Receiving calls from the rural communities ensures us that the information is getting out there,” Garrett said. “They all will be effected by the conversion and we are doing all we can to help with that process.”

A group of engineers answered the incoming calls and answered any specific questions a viewer might have, Garrett said. If the question and answer could benefit all viewers it was given to Borden and answered by Criss live on the air.

The information broadcast included viewing requirements for viewers in areas including, Portales, Clovis, Tucumcari, Hobbs and Ruidoso.
Viewers were also informed about how a converter box will convert the digital signal to analog for older TV sets.

Information about antennas and satellite dishes was also provided.

Verizon Adds 22 New Channels to FiOS TV Lineup - Including 15 in HD - for Oregon Customers

First in Series of Content Additions Will Include Multicultural and Sports Programming, Big Ten Network

Verizon FiOS TV is now even better for customers here as the company has launched 22 new channels, including 15 additional high-definition (HD) channels. FiOS TV customers in Oregon now have more than 440 HD choices available at any time, with a total of 42 HD channels and more than 400 HD video-on-demand (VOD) titles offered each month.

The first in a series of channel additions coming this year to Oregon, new content includes sports favorites like the Big Ten Network and Setanta Sports and new HD channels like CNN, CNBC, Bravo and USA. The next series of content additions will include more HD channels, including three new Starz channels and two new Showtime channels.

Verizon will continue expanding its FiOS TV channel lineup this year, with a major focus on HD content. By year-end, Verizon will offer all available major HD programming.

"High-definition and sports content are among the most popular TV programming, and we're bringing the best of both to FiOS TV," said Terry Denson, vice president - FiOS TV content and programming. "The addition of new HD and sports channels, along with the new multicultural content and more, is part of our commitment to lead the industry in the scope and quality of our programming."

Oregon customers join those in Ft. Wayne, Ind., as being among the first to receive the new FiOS TV channel lineup. During the next few months, Verizon will roll out the new content, region by region, in other areas where FiOS TV is available.

In Oregon, FiOS TV is available in parts of Beaverton, Cornelius, Damascus, Dundee, Durham, Forest Grove, Happy Valley, Hillsboro, King City, Lake Oswego, McMinnville, Newberg, Sherwood, Tigard, Tualatin, Wilsonville, and unincorporated areas of Washington and Yamhill counties. The service will launch in additional communities served by Verizon as the company expands its all-fiber network and secures local video-franchise agreements.

Verizon Leads the Way With 15 New HD Channels, and More to Come

FiOS TV customers in Oregon will now have a total of 42 HD channels. As previously announced, customers will get to see some of their favorite channels in HD, including Animal Planet, TLC, Science Channel and Smithsonian Channel. Other new HD programming that FiOS TV customers in Oregon will receive includes CNN, CNBC, Bravo, TBS, USA, Cinemax, HBO, History Channel, Weather Channel and SCI FI.

In addition, later this year those customers who subscribe to FiOS TV's Movie Package - which already includes more than 40 channels from Showtime, Starz, The Movie Channel, Encore, Sundance Channel and IFC, as well as access to hundreds of free movies on VOD - will have access to five new HD channels from Starz and Showtime: Starz Edge, Starz Comedy, Starz Kids and Family, Showtime and Showtime 2.

Big Ten Network and More Sports Content

For sports fans in Oregon, Verizon is launching four new HD sports channels. Verizon has always placed a high priority on providing all major sports programming and offering as much as possible in HD.

The company has now added top college basketball and football action with the Big Ten Network, which will be available in both standard- and high-definition. In addition, Verizon has launched two other new HD sports channels - Versus/Golf Channel, which features live events and original programming from Versus as well as PGA Tour and additional golf coverage; and the Outdoor Channel 2, which provides high-definition programming that promotes traditional outdoor activities like fishing, hunting and shooting sports.

In addition, Verizon also is now offering Setanta Sports, a premium channel dedicated to bringing European and International soccer and rugby to U.S.-based fans. Currently, no other cable provider offers Setanta.

New Multicultural Content for Diverse Audiences

Verizon has been focused on bringing a range of diverse, multicultural content to its FiOS TV customers. Verizon will soon offer Oregon customers 14 new multicultural channels, including leading channels for Arabic, Portuguese and Russian audiences, among others. These new channels continue to make FiOS TV an outlet for emerging and independent networks to showcase their diverse programming.

Much of the multicultural content comes from WorldTV, a division of content management and delivery company GlobeCast, which previously signed a distribution deal with Verizon for top-tier international channels. The new GlobeCast WorldTV international television channels include MBT (Arabic), RTPI (Portuguese) and RTR Planeta (Russian). In addition to the WorldTV content, Verizon will offer Filipino channel GMA Pinoy TV.

Verizon's FiOS TV service offers a broad collection of all-digital programming, with more than 400 total channels and 10,000 video-on-demand titles, 70 percent of which are free. The VOD library also includes an increasing number of HD titles, with 1,000 HD VOD titles per month by the end of the year. FiOS TV is currently available to more than 6.5 million homes in 13 states. In the less than three years since the service first launched, the company has signed up more than 1.2 million FiOS TV customers who enjoy hundreds of digital video and music channels, high-definition linear and on-demand programming, the nation's largest collection of video-on-demand content, a robust interactive media guide, and other advanced features.

Inclusive Media Channel [with]tv: Vision for Authentic Window into Community of People with Disabilities

"My inspiration for [with]tv came from lifetime experiences of raising my daughter, Victoria, who was born with developmental disabilities," said Howard Renensland, CEO & Founder of [with]tv. "The moment we are broadcasting, we will overnight change the lives of people with disabilities by providing an authentic window into the community."

While [with]tv is still in the start-up stage, Renensland has received support from around the world.

"I've received e-mails from nearly every nation on our blog asking what they can do. We have a good core group of volunteers working hard. Our goal began to be a media channel for everyone including people with disabilities, broadcast from a perspective of the community of people with disabilities and to be an inclusive broadcaster, meaning any viewer of television would be drawn to our programming. Our programming would be from our community, not that much different from other lifestyle channels, be they lifestyles for young urban men and women, lifestyles for gays and lesbians or people of varying cultures. Our entertainment and news would be marketed toward all groups. We didn't want to be exclusive for disabilities only. We're a mainstream broadcasting channel, but we're broadcasting from our perspective," Renensland explained. "We're doing what no one else is doing. We're actively aggressively seeking ownership, partnership and employees in management who are people with disabilities. The community of people with disabilities represents anywhere from 20% to 24% of the general population and yet we're less than 2% of the workforce in film and television. There's a great disparity for a variety of reasons, none of which have anything to do with ability, talent or potential."

Gaining attention around the world is a new television series from the BBC, "Britain's Missing Top Model," which features eight models with disabilities. Renensland believes there's room to amass a variety of media from all over the world on [with]tv.

"We want to be a distributor and creator of that content whether it's from England, Australia, New Zealand, Germany or another country. We would provide a place for every piece of content in our community to mirror what's being done in general television whether it's a beauty pageant, reality, drama, news, sports, comedy, film, talk, variety, whatever the format, we have plans for programming to mirror all those formats. We think we bring something extra to the table and we certainly bring a perspective that is largely, if not completely, absent from the mainstream media."

Investor funding remains a key issue to getting [with]tv on the air.

"To gain funding it will take someone recognizing the value we represent in terms of a market niche, even though it would be the largest niche in media, and that there is no broadcast media in the world doing what we're attempting to do. We already have an Internet talk radio show that is a modest initial beginning of our programming. We're just entering negotiations with some individuals on the West Coast that want to develop some radio network series of programs for us and with us. We've got other negotiations going on. We're talking with a major Midwestern University to be based on their college campus to include university campus television and radio stations in our distributorship because so many young people with disabilities are now, for the first time, getting access to higher education. We're working with a company that has a satellite link-up that is desirous of getting our content, which would cover all North and South America, plus 28 nations. We're talking to a person who represents a cable channel in Europe that´s going into 8 million homes. We're talking to two other networks in the United States that are faith-based. We've got a lot of people interested in our content, but what we're lacking is the funding to develop that content. It's an expensive proposition whether you're developing it for IPTV or for broadcast television."

As a career actor who found great success in commercials, Renensland knows the challenges he faces in the entertainment industry.

"Television and film is a ravenous industry. Content is king. If you've created 'Desperate Housewives' or 'The Sopranos' you have dynamite content that everybody is going to want and everyone will pay dearly for it. But, you can only watch so many episodes before you say, 'I'd like to see something different.' Providers need to always be on the lookout of new forms of content. There have been some remarkably successful vehicles focusing on disability lifestyle issues, oftentimes celebrity based such as the life and story of Ray Charles. But, we also had 'Rainman,' 'Radio,' 'Sam I Am' and 'Riding the Bus with My Sister.' The most famous TV show was 'Life Goes On,' about a family with a son with Down syndrome. There have been other shows about characters with disabilities. We had 'Longstreet' and 'Ironside' and other shows, but largely, disabilities are treated like any other subject matter. Let's get what we can out it, let's do it well, let's get it on, and then let's go on to the next piece. People with disabilities complain there is no mainstream channel to market to them. We're trying to be that."
Renensland points out that people with disabilities complain that when they are seen on television and film it's often one of two stereotypes.

"When people with disabilities are seen, which is rarely, they're either seen as super-cripple or super-pity. Super-cripple raises them to a level of a superhero when it's someone who has a devastating challenge, yet somehow they have managed to overcome that disability. You see that super-cripple on a pedestal and role model, which some people don't mind being role models but some do. They're just human beings who live their lifestyle. The other side of the coin is super-pity. It's an individual with a disability in such a dreadful position that you can only thank God at night that it's not you. That's what you see on television. From a creator of content, you can see value in those storylines. One is going to make you feel good at the end and the other is going to leave you in tears. But, we're missing the other piece. The one where you get a laugh or a chuckle. That's the one that fits the human condition. Life goes on and you need to approach life through a positive vane," Renensland detailed. "As long as you can count them on one hand, as long as you can name every performer with a disability on television, for all intensive purposes, there's nobody on TV with a disability. You can't name every African-American on television, you can't name every woman on television. Television should mirror society."

Renensland realized he should do something in film and television, where he found success.

"If I can successfully start a media channel, we'll give people with disabilities jobs and make them independent. More important, we are now in the public eye. We are media, and film and television, which is viewed by everyone else. The content we create will be inclusive. We'll put people with disabilities behind the camera in a variety of positions. Our anchors will also be people who will be deaf, people who have cerebral palsy, people in wheelchairs, or people who are blind. You will see people with disabilities in all kinds of roles. All of our commercials will be closed-captioned for people who are deaf and narrated for the visually impaired. We're creating a media voice for 54 million Americans times three. If you look at the worldwide population, that's 600 million people with disabilities. Disability issues translate across geographical and language barriers more than any other issue. If you use a wheelchair in Alabama you may have more in common with the person who uses a wheelchair in Beijing than a person who lives across the hall from you."

While Renensland focuses much of his work on [with]tv, he also continues to make appearances as a public speaker on raising a child with disabilities and is busy writing a book, "Including Victoria."

"It's a memoir about the 24 years I've spent including my daughter, Victoria. People with disabilities are automatically excluded from the moment they take their first breath. We'd like to think we're setting up a parallel universe for them, but we're not. From day one, I learned in the trenches, you don't just advocate for your child's survival, you have to advocate for every aspect of their life. Raising a child is wonderful. It's challenging and it's doubly challenging when the child has disabilities because society is largely not accommodating. You have to advocate in a kind and disciplined way for your child's rights. It's like a full-time job with 70 hours of overtime," Renensland said with an honest chuckle.

"In the end," Renensland added, "I hope I've been a good parent. I hope I've been part of the solution and not part of the problem. I firmly believe everyone has a role in life and a purpose for being here. The legacy will be that [with]tv had a major impact on people with disabilities because we're starting a mainstream media channel that for the first time will include people with disabilities. This will bring the community of people with disabilities together while creating an authentic view into our community for everyone."

Tri-City TV focuses on ‘community’

Tri-City TV Channel 59 is a new vision in local entertainment, according to Suzan Perkins, operations manager with Tri-City.

“Our localized approach to community service positions us to be an important resource for businesses, churches and residents in Bartlesville, Nowata and Dewey,” she said.

Their mission statement makes it clear: “To provide our three city area (Bartlesville, Dewey and Nowata) local advertising and programming which promotes the concept of ‘community’ in all local businesses and people.”

“With such a rich and diverse history in this area, programming ideas are at a constant flow and with so many successful businesses that are locally owned and operated, the advertising potential is infinite,” said Perkins.

Some of the show concepts already in production include CityTalk, a program about the people and places that make the Tri-City area such a paradise. Producers are also working on music and talent programs as well as locally produced children’s programming.

Unlike traditional TV stations, the goal here is to keep everything local, said Perkins.

“Tri-City TV is also heavily involved in assisting churches with the cultivation of their message. With such a strong faith-based community, it seems prudent that Tri-City TV would offer itself as a vessel for the messages of those churches.”

As of July 14, Tri-City TV is in about 14,000 homes in the Tri-City area. Their three-year goal will eventually take them into areas surrounding Bartlesville. Dewey and Nowata. Plans are already in place to secure a broadcast tower that will enable them to reach rural homes that do not have cable available. That will mean half-a-million viewers will have the potential to watch Tri-City TV.

The station is also taking a 21st century approach to promoting itself. Utilizing the social network MySpace.com, Tri-City TV has developed a viral marketing campaign that targets MySpace users of all ages who live in the area. He cut his teeth writing for the Miami, Fla., FOX affiliate WSVN Channel 7 working alongside CNN’s Rick Sanchez and America’s Most Wanted’s John Turchin. His experience has taken him all over the country directing video productions for clients such as Hillerich and Bradsby, the makers of The Louisville Slugger and CompuServe.

Moore has anchored news programs, interviewed celebrities and hosted entertainment programs for both television and radio.

TV crew draws a lot of attention when it shows up at fair

Thirteen-year-old Bill Tyree is impressed that WBNS Channel 10 TV News was reporting live from the Crawford County Fair on Friday.
"I haven't seen them here before, so it's really awesome that they are here," Tyree said.

Tyree's friend, Ferron Hobson, likes the fact that news anchors Andrea Cambern and Jerry Revish were in Bucyrus.

"It's pretty neat, I like it," Hobson said.

Crawford County Commissioner Mo Ressallat watches the news station regularly.

"We always watch Channel 10 News. I really like Andrea's 'Commit to be Fit' program. It boosts people's moral and gets them motivated to become healthier," Ressallat said.

Cambern likes being in Crawford County as part of the station's Road Trip series.

"We love being here and out of the studio. It gives us a chance to visit with our extended family here in Crawford County. We have a lot of viewers in this area," Cambern said.

Some of the Channel 10 team was in town a few weeks ago to film footage to be used during the live broadcast. Some of the places showcased were the Toledo and Ohio Central Train Station, X-T Innovations, the Speakeasy and the Downtown Bucyrus Theater.

Lok Sabha TV gears up for prime time show...

To charge Rs 1 lakh for every five-minute feed

It's going to be a field day for the 40-odd news channels in the country as they gear up to cover the UPA Government's trust vote on July 22.

From special polls to covering the behind the scenes story, the news channels are terming it as the ‘biggest drama that will get unfolded on television live'.

Amidst this, Lok Sabha TV, the dedicated satellite channel for covering the proceedings of Lok Sabha live, has already despatched letters to all major news channels along with its rate-card for using its signals.

News channels that use more than five-minutes of its feed of the Parliament's proceedings (on July 21, 22) will have to fork out Rs 100,000 for the event.

"We have had the practice of billing the news channels for using our special coverage like General Budget, Rail Budget and No-Confidence voting. And these billings are charged on per-event basis," Sunit Tondon, the newly appointed CEO, Lok Sabha TV, told Business Standard.

Lok Sabha TV is the only authorised television channel that covers all the proceedings in the Lower House of Parliament.

Its signals are taken by the various news channels, specially for events like the Budget and special sittings of Parliament.

Media experts are expecting high ratings on July 22, specially in the evenings when the the voting is scheduled to take place.

"It would be interesting to compare the ratings at the time of voting with some of the popular shows on television," a media expert said.

In order to move away from its dependence on the signals of Lok Sabha TV, the news channels have lined up their owns shows and surveys.

AC Nielsen has done a survey for Star News across 19-cities to gauge the mood of the people before the crucial trust vote. "We are calling it Desh ka Vishwas Mat where people will give their verdict much before July 22. We will of course keep tracking the stories behind the number-game in the trust vote backed by graphics," Shazi Zaman, Editor, MCCS—the company that broadcasts STAR News, STAR Majha and STAR Ananda.

The Lok Sabha secretariat too has made special arrangements for coverage of parliamentary proceedings.

Hundreds of media passes have been given out and giant TV screens will be set up in two conference rooms within the Lok Sabha premises and at a place where the TV crews set up their cameras, said Lok Sabha Secretary General P D T Achary.

Digital TV coming, but you still have options

Dear Dorothy: You're not the only one who finds the whole analog-to-digital switch confusing. We asked Rich Ruggiero, vice president of communications and public affairs at Comcast, and he said there are two separate things going on here: First, the government-mandated transition of the broadcast channels, and second, a programming change at Comcast.

What you were probably hearing about is the change within Comcast in which two of the channels previously on basic cable, Comcast Network (a local channel with high school sports and other programming) and Leased Access, will require either a digital set-top box or a TV with a digital tuner or a CableCARD.

If you want to receive these two channels, along with a few others such as NBC Weather Plus, ABC News Now, etc., and you don't have a TV with a digital tuner or a CableCARD, you would need to rent a set-top box from Comcast. If not, don't worry about it.

As far as the February 2009 transition to digital, if all your TVs are connected to Comcast, you're all set to receive your local broadcast channels just as you do now. More info is at Comcast.com/dtv.

For Fixer readers who watch their analog TVs using a rooftop antenna or "rabbit ears," you can either get a government coupon to help buy a digital converter box, buy a TV that has a digital tuner, or break down and get cable.

Dear Fixer: I am having a problem with the Northern Indiana Public Service Co. I had requested that electric service only be turned on at a rental property I own in Gary, beginning last Nov. 13, so a contractor I had hired could make some repairs.

The repairs were to be completed in one week. In December, I went to check on why the repairs hadn't been completed, and I discovered that the contractor's employee and his pit bull were living on my property without my permission and the gas was on.

I reported the illegal gas use to NIPSCO over the phone several times, but they never locked the gas meter. So I went to their office and reported it. I also initiated a theft/fraud investigation.

I faxed copies of litigation I had pursued against the contractor for illegally occupying my property. NIPSCO finally shut off the gas in March. The investigator looking into my complaint said he was going to bill the contractor for the gas, but his supervisor overruled his decision.

They have charged me for the illegal usage, as well as $125 for the fraud/theft investigation, and I cannot rent out the property until the entire $1,055.58 is paid.

Dear Robert: Too bad you didn't choose a contractor who'd do his job and go home.

The Fixer agrees, it would have been nice if NIPSCO could've shut off the spigot when this first happened, rather than in March. NIPSCO told us they did notice the gas was on in November, but there was a backlog of cases over the winter and that they keep gas on at homes while such matters are under investigation. They also claim they didn't receive a complaint from you until March.

You won a judgment (which you still haven't collected) against the contractor in small claims court for illegally occupying the home. But apparently NIPSCO didn't take that as proof that someone was defrauding you, as the judgment only pertained to the month of December.

After you complained to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, NIPSCO offered to reduce your bill to $466.29, but you've declined this offer and have filed an appeal with the commission. Good luck.

TV tips for the week of July 21

With the speedy rate at which reality TV talent shows are cropping up these days, it seems nearly everyone eager to take their hidden talents and tricks beyond YouTube and onto a national stage will have had their turn at doing so in the next few years. The latest offering in the rapidly growing genre is "Wanna Bet?", which has its premiere tonight with celebrities betting on the success or failure of wild stunts delivered by ordinary Americans. The money raised goes to charities. (A, ABC)

-Other talent competitions on the schedule include "Canadian Idol," where the Top 9 perform rock 'n' roll tunes (CTV); "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?", which boots off another hopeful (CBC); "Nashville Star," featuring another round of performances (E, NBC); and "High School Musical: Get in the Picture," airing its semifinal and final rounds. (CTV, ABC)

-If the huge success of "The Hills" and "Laguna Beach" has taught us anything, it's that many younger viewers love watching pretty, filthy rich teens partying, flirting and shopping. "Living on the Edge," premiering tonight, is much in the same vein only it takes place in England's Alderley Edge. (MTV)

-Talk about salacious summer spectacles. "Heidi Fleiss: The Would-Be Madam of Crystal" chronicles the infamous and troubled former "Hollywood madam" as she tries to open a lethal brothel - designed in the likeness of the White House - in Crystal, Nevada. Local authorities oppose the plan, saying she's unfit to run such a business because of her 1997 felony conviction related to her prostitution ring. Fleiss, who is also battling a history of drug abuse and personal demons, seeks advice from Marianne, a broke and bedridden former madam who lives with a bunch of exotic birds. (Movie Central) (Note: This program will air on The Movie Network, and repeat on Movie Central, tomorrow)

-It's elimination night on "Canadian Idol," which means the hopes and dreams of one singer will be crushed before a national television audience. (CTV)

-Many viewers will no doubt have their channels locked on "America's Got Talent" (A, NBC) and "Wipeout," which are both wiping out the competition in the ratings. (ABC, Global)

-"Celebrity Family Feud" has TV legend Ed McMahon and his family playing against retired football star-turned-sports broadcaster Tiki Barber and his relatives. The celebrities on the show are raising money for charity but McMahon might want to start raising some for himself soon as it was recently revealed that he's hundreds of thousands of dollars behind on payments on his Beverly Hills home. -The housemates of "Big Brother 10" deliver more delicious drama (Global, CBS) as do the wild ladies of "Rock of Love With Bret Michaels," who tonight have to make music videos for their bleached-blond hairband sweetie. One of the hopefuls vying for the Poison frontman's affection also has a meltdown. (Citytv)

-Eight movers and shakers stretch and whip around their limbs in more amazing routines on "So You Think You Can Dance." (CTV, Fox)

-Many of the "Big Brother," "Rock of Love" and "So You Think You Can Dance" participants would likely jump at the chance to extend their fleeting moment in the spotlight. Twelve reality TV "stars" from various programs got to do just that in "Kill Reality." The series sees contestants from the deep depths of reality TV history - including Jenna Lewis of "Survivor: Borneo" and Stacie Jones Upchurch of "The Apprentice" - making a horror movie called "The Scorned" together while living under the same roof. Unexpected hook-ups and nasty fights ensue. (E)

-On yet another reality show, the controversial "Baby Borrowers," the young parent-wannabes are in despair when many of the teens they're taking care of disappear in the middle of the night. (NBC)

-Two contestants are sent home on "So You Think You Can Dance," where Jessica King recently had to leave because of an injury. (CTV)

-Spoofing the "Last Comic Standing" and "So You Think You Can Dance" premises is "Reality Bites Back," which sees a bunch of comedians competing in challenges that satirize those in other reality shows. Challenges include "Almost-American Gladiators," "Hunting with the Stars" and "So You Think You Can Dive." The winner of the series, debuting tonight, gets $50,000 and the title of "Lord of All Reality." (The Comedy Network)

-The saliva-swapping neighbours of "Swingtown" learn more about each other's deep, dark secrets - and perhaps more - during Trina's "Puzzlerama" party. (Global, CBS)

-While some of us are guilty of creating fake accounts on social networking websites for privacy reasons, the subjects of "True Life: I Live Another Life on the Web" take that to a far more extreme level. -"Flashpoint," a Canadian cop series that's creating a splash on both sides of the border, sees Jackson Brannigan (Toronto actor Erik Knudsen) trying to make amends with the sister he used to steal from back in his drug-addiction days. In an effort to pay back the cash he owes her, Jackson goes to the home one of his former dealers to whom he lent money. Problem is, Jackson's visit happens on the same day the police stage a raid on the dealer's house. (CTV)

-Speaking of creating a splash, "Hot & Wet" sees MuchMusic VJs slapping on bathing suits (and hopefully sunscreen) and hitting the beach for a giant party featuring "the hottest and wettest hit videos." (MuchMusic)

-The characters in the iconic film "Revenge of the Nerds" would be proud of geeky and unathletic Rusty of "Greek" as he uses science to beat the muscular jocks at a game of floor hockey tonight. (CTV)

-The trivia competition "Duel?" has its season finale, with someone taking the $500,000 prize. (A, ABC)

-If your evening plans include a good laugh and a flick, consider "Anger Management," a comedy starring Adam Sandler as a businessman wrongly sentenced to undergo anger-management therapy offered by an aggressive doctor, played by Jack Nicholson. The Disney piece follows the TV and pop teen sensation on her sold-out 96-city concert tour earlier this year, giving fans a front-row view of the shows as well as behind-the-scenes footage. -Eight comedians from around the world compete in the "2008 Yuk Yuk's Great Canadian Laugh Off." Singapore Telecom launches live mobile TV on Nokia handsets

Southeast Asian telecommunications operator Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) launched a new mobile TV service that provides live TV channels with electronic program guide information and video-on-demand.

SingTel is one of the first telecom companies in Singapore to launch a mobile TV client with the real TV feel on mobile phones. Subscribers who pay a flat monthly fee enjoy unlimited viewing of rich content — both popular like local Channel 8 Prime Time and Channel NewsAsia to premium like Mei Ah Movies Channel. SingTel is offering a free service promotion for the first 90 days.

According to Sing Tel consumer marketing VP Wong Soon Nam, “With Singapore’s high mobile penetration rate and SingTel’s customer base of over 2.5 million mobile users, the largest in Singapore, it makes sense to offer compelling content on our mobile platform so that Singaporeans have access to their favorite mobile TV content wherever they may be.”

Although the application only works on several Nokia phone models right now, SingTel is talking with other mobile handset manufacturers to support the service.

Hopefully, you saw this blog posting on Monday. It came from a press release that was e-mailed to me promoting the show.

I just checked the on-screen TV listings on my Charter cable and it's not listed on either SportSouth (the old Turner South channel) or Fox Sports Net. It looks like it's on SportSouth, not Fox Sports Net.

I'm just going to cut-and-paste the press release that was sent to me. I don't know if that will help but at least you'll know as much (or as little) as I do.

BBC1 to be shown live on internet

BBC1 is to air live on the internet, making it the first of the corporation's analogue TV channels to be simulcast on the web.

For the first time in the flagship channel's 44-year history, viewers will not need a television to watch BBC1 live.

The channel will be available as a live video stream via bbc.co.uk, which is being relaunched with improved listings and programme information.

Making BBC1 available online will be a watershed moment for the corporation and the traditional television set.

Although BBC3 and the BBC News Channel are already simulcast online, they have always been digital services, whereas BBC1 is the first of the corporation's mainstream analogue networks to take the internet plunge.

Despite the move meaning viewers will not need a television to access BBC1, they will still have to pay the licence fee.

According to the corporation's licence fee website: "You need a TV licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, set-top box, video or DVD recorder, computer or mobile phone to watch or record TV programmes as they are being shown on TV."

Viewers can already catch up on BBC1 shows they have missed via the BBC iPlayer but have not been able to watch them live.

The plan was outlined today in the BBC's annual statements of programme policy and is due to be carried out within the next year.

The BBC director general, Mark Thompson, said: "Building on the success of the iPlayer, we want to develop bbc.co.uk to include a broad range of the BBC's broadcast content, as well as new and interactive forms of media that enable audiences to interact with and contribute to the website."

ITV.com has been simulcasting ITV1, ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4 since last summer.
